Alphas Carlton Smith, 82, of Goldsboro, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011. Al was born September 17, 1929 in La Grange to the late Heber and Lillian Ellis Smith. Al was a retired tobacco buyer with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and was also associated with Dixie Chemical Company. Al enjoyed the land and watching things grow, he farmed and was known for his tomatoes, grapes and homemade wine. Al loved nature where he enjoyed catfishing and feeding his ducks. Al was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church and was involved in the grill the church operated at the Wayne County Fair for over thirty-five years.
A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 2 p.m. from New Hope United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, La Grange.
Al is survived by two daughters, Pamela Jo Smith and fiance’, Christian Takash of Raleigh, Carla Smith Lancaster and husband, John of Goldsboro; sister, Frances Rouse; three brothers, Preston Smith, Bennie Smith and Pete Smith; his beloved canine companion, Sam; close friend, Jim Ivey; and his personal sitters, Mary Jo Wiggins, Dayle Barfield, Alice Whitfield, Jenny Pierce, Bunny Wooten and Sharon Blount.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, 200 East New Hope Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534. Arrangements are with Rouse Funeral Home, La Grange.
